This bill expands the scope of practice for optometrists in New Mexico and grants the Board of Optometry, which is the state agency responsible for licensing and regulating optometrists, additional powers. Specifically, it allows optometrists to perform certain in-office laser procedures on the lens capsule to treat clouding or other defects, and to use lasers on structures within the front part of the eye to prevent or treat glaucoma. The bill also empowers the Board of Optometry to establish requirements for optometrists to be certified to use pharmaceutical agents and to be credentialed for performing laser procedures. Furthermore, it clarifies that the Optometry Act does not apply to licensed physicians or those under their supervision, with the exception that such individuals cannot use trial lenses solely to determine prescriptions for eyeglasses or contact lenses.
