This resolution respectfully urges the Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners to name the bridge on County Route 18, also known as Ocean Avenue, which connects the Borough of Belmar and the Borough of Avon-by-the-Sea in Monmouth County, in honor of Jeffrey Mahon and Jeffrey Hoens, two individuals whose lives were tragically cut short and who had significant connections to the local community and the area around the bridge. Jeffrey Mahon, who grew up in Avon-by-the-Sea, died in a car accident at a young age, and his brother is the Chief of Police for Avon-by-the-Sea. Jeffrey Hoens tragically passed away while free diving near the bridge on what would have been Jeffrey Mahon's birthday, and his passing prompted an extensive search and rescue operation that deeply affected the community and the police department. The resolution acknowledges the historical practice of naming roadways in honor of citizens and recognizes the county board's authority to name county roadways, deeming it fitting and proper to memorialize both individuals at this significant location.
