This concurrent resolution extends the sincere congratulations of the Mississippi Legislature to Dr. John A. Peoples, Jr., the President Emeritus of Jackson State University (JSU), who is recognized as the oldest living president of a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) and is approaching his 100th birthday. The resolution celebrates Dr. Peoples' transformative leadership at JSU from 1967 to 1984, during which he oversaw significant institutional growth, expanded academic programs to doctoral levels, improved enrollment and infrastructure, and established key schools, all while serving during a pivotal era for HBCUs. It also acknowledges his distinguished military service in the United States Marine Corps during World War II, his academic achievements, his role in desegregation efforts, and his extensive community and civic involvement, highlighting his enduring impact and legacy as a guiding light for education in the state.
