AI Summary

This bill increases the penalty for certain individuals in positions of authority who engage in sexual misconduct with those in their care. Specifically, it elevates the offense from an aggravated misdemeanor to a class "D" felony for peace officers, or employees, contractors, vendors, volunteers, or agents of the department of corrections, judicial district departments of correctional services, county entities, or juvenile placement facilities, when they engage in a sex act with someone committed to the custody of the department of corrections or a judicial district department of correctional services, a juvenile placed at a juvenile facility, or a prisoner in a county jail. A class "D" felony is a serious crime punishable by up to five years in prison and a significant fine. This change aims to provide stronger penalties for abuse of power in correctional and juvenile settings.
