This bill proposes to add a new section to South Dakota law, chapter 32-5, which governs motor vehicle registration. Specifically, it allows residents who are active members of a volunteer fire department to apply for an exemption from certain license fees for one noncommercial automobile, pickup truck, or van registered in the state. To qualify, applicants must provide a certification from their fire department chief confirming their active volunteer status. While this exemption covers registration fees, it does not exempt individuals from paying the excise tax on the purchase price of the vehicle, nor does it cover any additional costs associated with specialty license plates. The exemption can be renewed annually.
