This bill mandates that health carriers and health benefit plans, which are entities that provide health insurance, must cover treatments for obesity and severe obesity, as well as related conditions, for individuals between the ages of two and twenty years old. This coverage, which applies to plans issued or renewed in Missouri on or after January 1, 2027, includes intensive lifestyle changes, medication, and surgical procedures, and must adhere to guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Pediatric Committee. Importantly, these obesity treatments cannot have higher deductibles or co-payments than other services offered by the plan, though this requirement does not extend to supplemental insurance policies like life care contracts or Medicare supplement policies.
