Bill Summary

Amend The South Carolina Code Of Laws By Amending Section 16-7-10, Relating To Illegal Acts During States Of Emergency, So As To Include That Harassing Or Threatening A Worker Restoring Critical Services Is A Misdemeanor, And That Assaulting Or Endangering A Worker Restoring Critical Services Or Destroying Or Tampering With An Electric Utility System Is A Felony, And To Define Critical Services.

AI Summary

This bill amends South Carolina law to create new penalties for interfering with workers providing essential services during a state of emergency. Specifically, it makes it a misdemeanor to harass or threaten a worker who is restoring "critical services," which are defined as electric, gas, water, sewer, road repair, telephone, cell, satellite, or internet services, or other services necessary for homes and businesses. Furthermore, it elevates the offense to a felony if someone assaults or endangers such a worker, or if they destroy, damage, or tamper with an electric utility system. These new penalties are in addition to existing laws.
