This bill prohibits the operation of oversized vehicles by automated driving systems (ADS), which are vehicles equipped with technology that allows them to drive themselves. Specifically, it adds a new section to Alabama law stating that if a vehicle is oversized and would normally require a special permit for movement, it cannot be operated by an ADS-equipped vehicle. The bill also amends an existing section to clarify that while ADS-equipped vehicles are primarily governed by this chapter, nothing in it creates a duty for the state or local governments to upgrade infrastructure to accommodate these vehicles, and it explicitly states that no municipality or other entity can impose taxes or requirements specifically related to the operation of ADS-equipped vehicles. This act is set to become effective on October 1, 2026.
