This bill establishes an "Advanced Math Pathway" for public K-12 students in Alabama, which is defined as a sequence of math courses that accelerates or combines content from different grade levels, aiming for students to take Algebra I or its equivalent in middle school and college-level math courses in high school. Local school districts are required to develop these pathways and automatically enroll students who score proficient or at grade level on statewide math assessments in grades five through 11, or demonstrate proficiency through local measures. Parents can opt their children out of this automatic enrollment or opt them into advanced math courses if they don't meet the automatic enrollment criteria. Schools must provide instructional support beyond core math, such as tutoring or additional instructional time, to help students succeed in these advanced courses. The State Department of Education will annually report to the Legislature on student participation, performance, and the types of advanced math pathways and support offered by each school district.
