This resolution commends Debbie Ryan for her significant contributions to women's basketball and her leadership. It highlights her long tenure as the head coach for the University of Virginia's women's basketball team from 1977 to 2011, during which she achieved 739 wins, led the team to 24 NCAA Tournament appearances and three Final Four berths, and earned numerous coaching accolades, including seven Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Coach of the Year awards and national coach of the year honors in 1991. The resolution also acknowledges her success coaching the U.S. women's national teams, leading them to a gold medal in the World University Games and a silver medal in the Pan American Games. Furthermore, it recognizes her induction into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame and the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame, and notes that the University of Virginia will honor her with a banner in 2026. The General Assembly is expressing its admiration for her legacy and directing the Clerk of the Senate to present a copy of this resolution to her.
