AI Summary

This bill, the Quality Basic Education Act, introduces several changes to Georgia's educational requirements, primarily focusing on digital literacy and financial literacy. It mandates that all students from kindergarten through twelfth grade receive age-appropriate instruction in digital literacy, covering topics like online safety, responsible internet use, and evaluating digital information, including artificial intelligence. The bill also requires the Department of Education to develop model programs for this instruction and to publish an annual report on online safety education efforts. For financial literacy, the bill establishes new content standards for all grade levels, with a significant emphasis on the risks of gambling for students in ninth through twelfth grade, including probability, addiction, and financial consequences. Crucially, it allows students in ninth and tenth grade to fulfill their high school graduation requirement for a financial literacy course, which must now include in-depth real-world scenarios and gambling risk analysis. Furthermore, public schools are prohibited from partnering with or accepting donations from entities involved in gambling, and the Department of Education is authorized to provide technical support and resources, provided they are not sourced from gambling enterprises. Finally, the bill also mandates the development and distribution of instructional materials on safe firearm storage for parents and guardians.
