This bill, commencing with the 2027–28 school year, mandates that coaches in high school athletic programs, including those in interscholastic athletics and other school-sponsored athletic programs, must complete specific mental health and behavioral training. For coaches in interscholastic athletic programs at high schools that are members of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), this includes initial training and subsequent training every two years on mental health. For coaches in other school athletic programs (non-interscholastic), school districts, county offices of education, and charter schools must ensure their coaches complete initial training and recurring training every two years covering both sudden cardiac arrest and youth athletics behavioral and mental health. Private school coaches in non-interscholastic athletic programs will also be required to complete similar initial and recurring pupil mental health training. These requirements are intended to enhance the well-being of young athletes by ensuring coaches are better equipped to address behavioral and mental health needs, building upon existing coaching education programs that already include components like sports psychology and first aid.
