This bill prohibits the distribution, sale, offer for sale, and use of any pesticide product containing paraquat dichloride or any other chemical form of paraquat, which is a synthetic, nonselective contact herbicide known for its high acute toxicity and potential to cause poisoning. The bill defines "paraquat" to include the chemical with CAS number 4685-14-7 and its salts, such as methyl viologen and paraquat bismethylsulfate. This action is being taken by New York State to protect its residents from the known health effects of paraquat exposure, including an increased risk of Parkinson's disease, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, renal cancer, thyroid cancer, and childhood leukemia, despite the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) continued registration of paraquat products. The ban will take effect on January 1, 2028, with the rest of the act becoming effective immediately upon passage.
