This bill prohibits the distribution, sale, purchase, or use of any pesticide product containing paraquat dichloride or any other chemical form of paraquat, which is a highly toxic herbicide that kills vegetation on contact. The bill defines "paraquat" to include the chemical with CAS number 4685-14-7 and its salts, such as methyl viologen and paraquat bismethylsulfate. This action is being taken due to concerns about paraquat's potential to cause serious health issues, including an increased risk of Parkinson's disease, and the fact that many other countries and the European Union have already banned its use, despite the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) currently allowing its continued registration for use. The bill is set to take effect on January 1, 2027.
