This bill authorizes the city of Cranston to create a specialized housing division within its existing municipal court. This new division will be empowered to hear and decide cases related to violations of various housing and zoning ordinances, including those concerning minimum housing standards, housing maintenance, and the state building code. The bill also allows for the appointment of a judge and clerk specifically for this housing division, who may or may not be the same individuals serving the main municipal court. Furthermore, the housing division can be granted equitable powers to address violations, such as ordering repairs, vacation, demolition, or even placing a dwelling into receivership, and appeals from its decisions will go to the superior court for a new trial. This act will become effective immediately upon its passage.
