This bill expands the scope of practice for Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) by removing the requirement for physician supervision for those with at least two years of experience, allowing them to practice independently. It also defines "non-supervised CRNA" as one with two or more years of supervised practice after certification and initial licensure, and "supervised CRNA" as one with less than two years of such experience. The bill grants non-supervised CRNAs independent authority to deliver anesthesia care and related services without physician oversight, and allows them to issue prescriptions and order tests, though these prescriptions must include the name of the supervising CRNA or physician with whom guidelines were mutually developed. The bill also directs the Executive Office of Health and Human Services (EOHHS) to seek any necessary Medicaid waivers from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to ensure reimbursement for CRNA services, with a deadline of September 1, 2026, for submitting the Medicaid state plan amendment. This legislation is set to take effect on January 1, 2027.
