This bill creates a new crime called "Making a False Material Statement to the Legislature," which applies to anyone who knowingly makes an untrue statement during a legislative proceeding, such as a committee hearing, on a matter they were asked to testify about, even if not under oath. However, this prohibition does not extend to statements made by members of the public during designated public comment periods. If a legislator witnesses such a false statement, they can report it to the district attorney. Committing this offense is classified as a fourth-degree felony.
