This bill establishes a competitive emergency mapping grant program, funded by state appropriations, to help school districts and boards of cooperative educational services (BOCES), which are organizations that provide shared educational services to multiple school districts, update their interior floor plans, blueprints, schematics, or other maps of their school buildings, grounds, and surrounding roads. These maps are crucial components of their building-level emergency response plans, which are required by law to ensure safety. A key requirement for schools receiving these grants is that their maps must be compatible with the software used by local, state, county, and federal law enforcement agencies and school security systems, meaning these agencies and schools should be able to view the map data without needing to buy extra software or integrate third-party programs. Additionally, the accuracy of these maps must be verified through an initial and annual walkthrough of the school buildings and grounds. The commissioner will prioritize awarding these grants to "high need districts," meaning those with greater financial or educational challenges. This act takes effect immediately upon its passage.
