This civics education must cover the roles and responsibilities of federal, state, and local governments, the functions of the legislative, executive, and judicial branches, and the meaning of historical documents like the U.S. Constitution. While schools can integrate civics into existing social studies curricula, students transferring into a public school during the second semester of eighth grade may be exempt from the specific civics credit requirement if they have met other social studies and American civics instruction criteria. The bill also clarifies that this does not necessitate new statewide assessments for civics.
