AI Summary
This bill expands the prescriptive authority of advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) and physician assistants (PAs) in Georgia, allowing them to prescribe certain medications under specific conditions. For APRNs, it clarifies that they can issue prescription drug orders for hydrocodone and oxycodone, or compounds thereof, in emergency situations, limited to a five-day supply for individuals 18 years or older, provided they have at least one year of experience and are in good standing, and complete continuing education on these medications. The bill also introduces the ability for APRNs to prescribe "stimulants," defined as substances that increase heart rate, breathing, or brain function, again with experience, good standing, and continuing education requirements. Similarly, physician assistants can now be delegated the authority to prescribe stimulants and, in emergency situations, hydrocodone, oxycodone, or compounds thereof, with similar limitations on supply and patient age, and specific continuing education requirements for both APRNs and PAs regarding these controlled substances and stimulants. The bill also removes a prohibition on APRNs writing prescriptions for minors for certain controlled substances in emergency situations, and updates language to include the new prescriptive authorities for both APRNs and PAs in various sections of the law.
