This bill authorizes the Maryland Medical Assistance Program, also known as Medicaid, to provide comprehensive coverage for the treatment of obesity starting January 1, 2027. Comprehensive coverage for obesity treatment is defined to include intensive behavioral therapy, bariatric surgery, and any medications approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for chronic weight management in individuals with obesity. The Maryland Department of Health is required to notify program recipients if they decide to offer this coverage and must report to specific legislative committees by November 1, 2027, on whether they have begun providing this coverage and, if not, the reasons why. The bill also allows the Department of Health to seek federal approval for this coverage.
