This bill establishes the Food Waste Task Force within the Department of Health, a group of 12 appointed members representing various state departments, the Legislature, and the public, tasked with identifying and recommending actions to reduce food waste in West Virginia. The task force will examine factors contributing to food waste and propose strategies to prevent it, increase food donations, educate consumers on food storage, relax overly strict cosmetic standards for produce, reduce the rejection of imperfect-looking food, build systems to distribute surplus food to charities, eliminate state regulations that cause waste, and standardize "best by" food labels to better inform consumers about safe consumption dates, all while aligning with national efforts. The task force will receive staff support from the Department of Human Services and is expected to submit a report of its findings and recommendations to the Governor and Legislature within one year of its organization, after which it will expire.
