This bill, known as the "School Mental Health Transparency Act," requires the Tennessee Department of Education to create and maintain a public list of mental health resources available to students across the state, which will be published on the department's website. To compile this comprehensive list, the department will collaborate with various state agencies, including those focused on children's services, health, mental health and substance abuse, human services, and TennCare, as well as the Tennessee governor's children's cabinet, and any other relevant entities. Following this, each public school will then use the department's master list to create its own specific list of mental health resources accessible to its enrolled students. Starting with the 2026-2027 school year, public schools must provide this school-specific list to parents or guardians, or to students who are 18 or older, at least once annually, and also publish it on their own websites. It's important to note that being included on these lists does not constitute an endorsement of any particular mental health resource by the state or the schools, and the act does not mandate new staff, programs, or spending.
