This bill requires that when applying for or renewing a driver's license in Tennessee, staff at driver license stations must ask applicants if they want a license that complies with the federal REAL ID Act of 2005 or one that does not. The REAL ID Act sets minimum security standards for state-issued identification and driver's licenses, which are needed for certain federal purposes like boarding domestic flights or entering some federal buildings. Applicants will receive a printed document explaining the requirements and uses for both REAL ID compliant and non-REAL ID compliant licenses, and they must sign to confirm they received this information and made their choice. If an applicant chooses not to get a REAL ID compliant license, their application for a non-compliant one will be processed. The bill also mandates that the department's website clearly state that obtaining a REAL ID compliant license is optional. This change is set to take effect on July 1, 2026.
