This bill prohibits Local Education Agencies (LEAs), which are public school districts, and public charter schools in Tennessee from selling, offering for sale, or providing to students on school property through their school nutrition programs any food or beverage item that contains specific artificial food dyes, including Allura Red AC (also known as Red 40), Erythrosine B (also known as Red 3), Tartrazine (also known as Yellow 5), Sunset Yellow FCF (also known as Yellow 6), Erioglaucine disodium salt (also known as Blue 1), Indigo carmine (also known as Blue 2), or Fast Green FCF. These dyes are petroleum-based synthetic colorings commonly found in various food products. The prohibition applies to all such food and beverage items on or after August 1, 2027, with a specific provision for contracts with third-party food providers, meaning that any contracts entered into, renewed, or amended on or after that date must comply with this restriction, though existing contracts made before August 1, 2027, are exempt until their renewal or amendment.
