This bill increases the penalty for vehicular homicide in Tennessee when the death is caused by a driver's extreme and excessive rate of speed, which is defined as traveling more than 20 miles per hour over the posted speed limit. Previously, vehicular homicide was a Class C felony, but under this bill, if the death is a "proximate result" (meaning a direct cause) of this excessive speeding, it will now be classified as a more serious offense, a Class B felony, under Tennessee Code Annotated (TCA) Title 39, which deals with criminal offenses. The bill also amends TCA Title 55, which covers motor and other vehicles, to reflect these changes.
