This bill amends Tennessee law to allow private postsecondary institutions, which are colleges or universities that are not publicly funded, to operate public charter schools, including those that are religiously affiliated. Previously, the law restricted who could sponsor or establish a public charter school, generally excluding for-profit entities, nonpublic schools (private schools), and postsecondary institutions that were not regionally accredited. This bill removes those restrictions for private postsecondary institutions, allowing them to apply to open a public charter school and to give enrollment preference to children of their employees or governing body members, similar to how public higher education institutions can do.
