This bill, effective July 1, 2026, aims to strengthen protections for houses of worship by increasing penalties for certain criminal acts. Specifically, if vandalism occurs at a house of worship, the sentencing court must impose a fine that is at least double the amount of any property damage, loss, or cleaning and restoration expenses incurred by the house of worship. Additionally, the bill clarifies and expands the definition of offenses related to interfering with or intimidating individuals exercising their right to religious freedom at a house of worship, or intentionally damaging their property, with penalties escalating to felonies for repeat offenses. It also allows for civil actions by individuals and houses of worship to seek damages and legal costs, and empowers the Attorney General to pursue civil penalties for violations.
