This bill requires public schools in Tennessee to create and implement a student safety plan when an order of protection is issued between two students enrolled in the same school. An "order of protection" is a legal document designed to shield someone from harm by another person. The safety plan, to be developed by the school principal and potentially a school safety team with input from the protected student's parent or guardian, must include procedures for sharing the order with school staff, physically separating the students as much as possible (which could involve removing the student named as the respondent, or the one causing the harm, from shared classes or activities), establishing ways for students to report any contact, documenting any attempts at contact, and outlining how to contact law enforcement if a violation is suspected. Parents or guardians of the protected student must also inform the school of any changes to the order of protection within 48 hours so the safety plan can be updated.
