This bill allows graduates of specific four-year engineering technology programs accredited by ABET ETAC (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission) to become registered professional engineers in Tennessee, provided they meet certain requirements. Previously, this pathway was not explicitly available. Under this new provision, these graduates must have their qualifications approved by the board, submit references from three currently registered Tennessee engineers, and pass an initial exam on the fundamentals of engineering administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). After successfully passing this first exam, they will then be eligible to take a second NCEES exam focused on the principles and practice of engineering. Upon passing both exams and demonstrating at least eight years of progressive, supervised engineering experience with a licensed professional engineer that proves their competence, they can be granted a certificate of registration to practice engineering in the state, as long as they meet all other qualifications. The bill takes effect for rule-making purposes immediately upon becoming law and for all other purposes on July 1, 2026.
