This bill amends Tennessee law to allow local education agencies (LEAs), which are school districts, to authorize their school safety personnel, in addition to law enforcement, to review evidence from cameras installed on the exterior of school buses. This evidence can be used to determine if another vehicle has illegally passed a stopped school bus that is picking up or dropping off children, a violation of traffic law. The bill clarifies that "school safety personnel" includes school safety officers, school resource officers (who are law enforcement officers assigned to schools), or any other individual employed or contracted by an LEA whose job involves student safety or school security. LEAs can choose to enter into agreements with local law enforcement, authorize school safety personnel to review camera evidence and issue violations, or do both concurrently.
