This bill expands the investigative authority of the Office of the State Prosecutor, which is an independent agency responsible for investigating certain crimes involving public officials, to include threats made against judges or judges-elect. Previously, the State Prosecutor could investigate various offenses such as election law violations, public ethics violations, bribery, and malfeasance in office, but this bill specifically adds the investigation of threats against judges to its purview. A "threat" is defined broadly to include both oral and written threats, regardless of whether they are signed or signed with a false name. The bill also clarifies that making such a threat is a misdemeanor offense, punishable by up to three years in prison or a $2,500 fine.
