This bill mandates that all health insurance plans in Colorado, including those offered by large employers, small employers, and individuals, as well as the state's Medicaid program, must cover hormone replacement therapy (HRT) when prescribed by a licensed physician for women experiencing menopause or perimenopause. Hormone replacement therapy is defined as a medical treatment to replace hormones the body isn't producing enough of, and can include various forms like creams, oral medications, pellets, or vaginal devices approved by the FDA. Large employer plans must provide this coverage starting January 1, 2027, while individual and small group plans will be required to do so starting January 1, 2028, provided the state isn't obligated to pay for it. The Medicaid program is required to offer HRT coverage beginning July 1, 2027, subject to federal authorization and funding. The bill also prohibits health plans from denying or limiting HRT that aligns with accepted medical standards or requiring prior authorization for it.
