This bill establishes the Mountaineer Games Sports League (MGSL) in West Virginia, aiming to promote physical activity and health among residents, particularly adults, by offering organized sports at little to no cost. The MGSL will be managed by a part-time board of directors, appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate, responsible for its overall structure, scheduling, and operations. The board's duties include fostering partnerships, recruiting volunteers, securing facilities, promoting the league's benefits, and identifying funding. The league will comprise "League Affiliates," such as institutions of higher education and community colleges, with other organizations like labor unions also able to join. The MGSL will offer sports like basketball, baseball, flag football, volleyball, tennis, cycling, golf, soccer, and weightlifting, with divisions for high school students, adults 18 and over, adults 50 and over, and college students, and may add more sports based on public interest. Additionally, beginning in the 2026-2027 school year, West Virginia University and Marshall University will schedule at least one game between each of their athletic teams, known as the Mountaineer Games Governor's Cup, to promote the league, with the winning school receiving a trophy.
