This bill, effective January 1, 2027, amends Illinois law to prohibit insurance companies from requiring prior authorization or step therapy, which is a process where patients must try less expensive medications before a more expensive one is approved, for menopause therapy, defined as any FDA-approved hormonal or non-hormonal treatment for perimenopause or menopause symptoms, when the therapy is FDA-approved, aligns with established medical guidelines, and is prescribed by a qualified clinician, meaning a physician, advanced practice registered nurse, or physician assistant. Additionally, the bill mandates that physicians, advanced practice registered nurses, and physician assistants complete up to two hours of continuing education every renewal cycle on recognizing and managing perimenopause and menopause, which will count towards their existing continuing education requirements without increasing the total hours needed, and will cover topics such as symptom patterns, diagnosis, appropriate testing, treatment options, and culturally competent care.
