The bill further provides that a dependent child receiving a transferred tuition benefit is eligible to receive up to eight credits per semester tuition-free.

AI Summary

This bill allows members of the New Jersey National Guard, who are eligible for tuition benefits at public higher education institutions, to transfer those benefits to their spouse or a dependent child. Currently, eligible National Guard members can receive up to 16 tuition-free credits per semester after completing their initial training and meeting other academic and financial aid requirements. Under this bill, a Guard member can transfer 50% of these tuition benefits to a spouse, allowing them to receive up to 16 tuition-free credits per semester, or transfer 100% of the benefits to a dependent child, who would then be eligible for up to eight tuition-free credits per semester. To receive these transferred benefits, the spouse or child must be accepted into and in good academic standing at a public institution of higher education and must have applied for all available state and federal student grants and scholarships for which they are eligible. A Guard member can only transfer their benefit to one person. The State will reimburse public institutions for the tuition costs not covered by other federal benefits.
