AI Summary

This bill, known as the "Georgia Virtual Public School Student Athletic Participation Act," amends the existing "Dexter Mosely Act" to allow students enrolled full-time in qualifying virtual public schools to participate in extracurricular and interscholastic activities, such as sports, band, or clubs, through their local resident public school or school system. A "qualifying virtual school" is defined as a public school that offers only online instruction and does not provide its own interscholastic athletic programs for students in grades six through 12. To be eligible, virtual school students must meet the same age, academic, behavioral, and residency requirements as students enrolled in traditional public schools, provide notice to their resident school at least 30 days before participation, submit academic reports, and abide by the school's code of conduct and disciplinary measures. The bill also clarifies that students who withdraw from a public school to enroll in a qualifying virtual school will be ineligible for participation for 12 months. This change aims to provide more opportunities for virtual school students to engage in school-sponsored activities, with the provisions taking effect for the 2027-2028 school year.
