This bill amends the School Code to expand existing requirements for disability history and awareness instruction in school districts. In addition to teaching about disability history and the disability rights movement, school districts will now be required to provide instruction on disability awareness and inclusion education, equipping students with practical skills for peer support and interaction. This comprehensive instruction will include grade-appropriate content on understanding different disabilities and accessible practices, peer inclusion training and collaborative projects to foster interaction between students with and without disabilities, hands-on workshops, school-wide programming during March (National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month), and recognition systems for exemplary inclusion practices by students, classes, and schools. The goal is to promote self-determination for all students and encourage collaboration with individuals with disabilities and relevant community organizations in developing and delivering this education.
