This bill amends the Heroes Way Designation Program Act to expand who can apply for honorary road signs honoring fallen service members. Previously, only immediate family members could apply. Now, if no eligible family member is available, any federally-chartered veterans service organization (a group chartered by the U.S. Congress and incorporated in Illinois) or state-chartered veterans service organization (a group chartered by the Illinois Attorney General) can apply for a designation for a member of the U.S. Armed Forces who was killed in action and was an Illinois resident at the time of their death. The bill also clarifies definitions for these types of veterans organizations and ensures that the service member's name is listed on the National Gold Star Family Registry.
