This bill amends the Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA) by defining "security purpose" to encompass activities like preventing or investigating retail theft, fraud, or other forms of misappropriation, as well as protecting property from trespass, controlling access, and safeguarding individuals from harm such as stalking or harassment, including assisting law enforcement investigations. Importantly, it creates an exception to certain BIPA requirements for collecting, capturing, or obtaining a person's biometric data (like fingerprints or facial scans) if it's solely for these defined security purposes, provided the data is only used for that purpose, retained only as long as necessary, and a process for deletion is documented. The bill takes effect immediately upon becoming law.
