This concurrent resolution requests the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), in partnership with the Department of Education and the State Public Charter School Commission, to create a Student Coral Stewardship Program. This program aims to educate the public about protecting coral reefs, particularly by raising awareness about reef-safe sunscreen options, as certain sunscreen ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate have been scientifically shown to harm coral reefs, contributing to coral bleaching. The resolution acknowledges previous legislative efforts to protect coral reefs and highlights the interest and capacity of students in environmental stewardship. The proposed program will be educational and voluntary, potentially involving student-led outreach and community engagement based on scientific research. The DLNR is also asked to report back to the Legislature by early 2027 with an update on their collaborative efforts, including student input and any recommendations for future legislative action, policy changes, or funding to further coral reef protection and student involvement.
