This bill allows named beneficiaries of group term life insurance benefits from the State Employees' Assurance Department, specifically from the retired and vested inactive members trust fund or the active members fund, to assign those benefits to a licensed funeral director or embalmer to cover the costs of funeral services for the deceased member. Funeral services are defined to include observances, services, or ceremonies for dead human bodies, encompassing transportation, embalming, cremation, and interment. To make this assignment, the beneficiary must provide a written authorization form prescribed by the board of directors, a notarized copy of the contract with the funeral service provider, and a copy of the deceased member's death certificate, and the State Employees' Assurance Department will then pay the assigned amount directly to the funeral service provider up to the amount owed.
