This resolution recognizes the fiftieth anniversary of the restoration of Ahuena Heiau, a historically and culturally significant site in Kailua, Kona, on the island of Hawai'i. Ahuena Heiau served as the religious temple and center of political and spiritual governance for Kamehameha the Great, the ruler who united the Hawaiian Islands, and was the site of pivotal events including his death and the abolition of the kapu system, a set of ancient laws that governed Hawaiian society. The resolution also acknowledges the site's importance in the royal history of the Hawaiian Kingdom and highlights the collaborative archaeological restoration that began in 1975, guided by historical research and community support, which returned the heiau (a Hawaiian temple or sacred place) to its former dignity. Furthermore, it expresses appreciation to all those involved in preserving Ahuena Heiau as a living place of history and learning, and directs that certified copies of the resolution be sent to relevant organizations.
