This bill modifies requirements for social studies education in elementary and secondary schools by integrating social studies content into literacy instruction for kindergarten through grade 3, and by establishing new standards for elementary social studies education, requiring regular instruction in history, geography, civics, and economics, with an emphasis on integrating these subjects with English language arts and mathematics, and by increasing the required units for social studies graduation to 3.5, including specific requirements for American constitutional government and citizenship, and United States history, with provisions for earning some of these credits through verbal communication courses or activities focused on civic education, or participation in the Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC).
