This resolution designates March 10, 2026 "South Plainfield Day" in honor of the Borough of South Plainfield's 100th anniversary. The Borough of South Plainfield in Middlesex County, New Jersey, was incorporated on March 10, 1926. March 10, 2026, will mark the 100th anniversary of the Borough. This centennial celebration is particularly fortuitous due to its coincidence with national celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the United States in 2026. Long before it was formally incorporated, many people lived and worked in the Borough, including the Lenape, Quakers, and Baptists. During the American Revolutionary War, the Borough was a military crossroads as well as the site of multiple skirmishes between British and American forces. Numerous Borough businesses and organizations have made a mark on New Jersey and the nation, including Hadley Field, which made aviation history through the first-ever night airmail flights, the Plainfield Curling Club, which is the largest and oldest curling club in New Jersey, and MRP Steel, which fabricated thousands of tons of steel to help construct One World Trade Center following the September 11, 2001 terror attacks. Today, over 25,000 people call the Borough home, including many families, small business owners, trades workers, artists, athletes, and public servants who all contribute to the Borough's vibrant community. The Borough plans to celebrate and commemorate its centennial throughout the year, with a reenactment of the borough's first council meeting, the placement of a time capsule, the holding of an essay contest, the issuance of commemorative keepsakes, and the unveiling of Centennial Square at Putnam Park.
