This bill requires each school district governing board to establish a public safety policy that outlines specific procedures and protocols, designates the school district superintendent as the responsible administrator for implementing this policy, and mandates that the superintendent notify parents, school employees, and the community about any incidents involving threats to public safety or life-threatening violence. Furthermore, the superintendent must immediately alert law enforcement to any observed or reported incidents of life-threatening violence, threats of such violence, or threats involving a deadly weapon or dangerous instrument (defined as items that can cause death or serious physical injury, similar to how they are defined in criminal law), and must confiscate any such prohibited items found on school property until law enforcement can take custody, promptly informing law enforcement of any confiscation. The bill also prohibits retaliatory actions against anyone reporting violations and establishes criminal penalties, classifying violations as felonies ranging from a class 6 to a class 4 felony depending on whether physical injury results, for both superintendents and governing board members who fail to comply with these safety requirements.
