This bill amends Wyoming law concerning child custody, aiming to promote shared custody arrangements between parents. The bill also defines "joint legal custody" (shared decision-making about a child's health, education, and welfare), "joint physical custody" (child living with each parent for roughly equal time), and "shared custody" (combining both joint legal and physical custody). Importantly, for temporary custody orders, courts must order shared custody unless they find it's not in the child's best interest, and for final custody orders, courts must consider shared custody and explain in writing why it's not being ordered if that's the case. The bill also adds providing false information to the court about domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, or neglect as a factor to consider in determining a child's best interests and specifies that these changes apply to custody actions filed on or after July 1, 2026.
