This bill, concerning the county highway department in Weakley County, Tennessee, clarifies that the County Highway Supervisor, who is the chief administrative officer responsible for building and maintaining county roads according to state law (Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 54, Chapter 7, Parts 1 and 2), will continue in their elected position as long as they meet specific qualifications. These qualifications include being a U.S. citizen, a resident of Tennessee and Weakley County for at least two years, at least 25 years old, and possessing either an engineering degree with relevant experience or licensed to practice engineering in Tennessee, or having at least four years of supervisory experience in highway construction or maintenance, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, along with a high school education or GED. The current supervisor will serve out their term, and future supervisors will be elected by popular vote every four years starting in August 2026. Importantly, this bill will only take effect if approved by a two-thirds vote of the Weakley County legislative body, and its provisions are severable, meaning if one part is found invalid, the rest will still stand.
