This bill, effective January 1, 2027, expands the types of commercial motor vehicles that disabled veterans, former American prisoners of war, Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, Purple Heart recipients, and their surviving spouses can receive fee waivers for. Previously, these fee exemptions applied to passenger motor vehicles, motorcycles, and commercial motor vehicles weighing less than 8,001 pounds unladen weight (meaning the weight of the vehicle without cargo or passengers). This bill removes that specific weight limit for commercial motor vehicles, and instead defines a vehicle eligible for these fee waivers as a passenger motor vehicle, a motorcycle, or a commercial motor vehicle weighing less than 10,000 pounds unladen weight. These fee waivers are for registration and vehicle license fees and do not apply to vehicles used for hire, compensation, or profit.
