This bill requires the Maryland Department of Health to include screening for Gaucher disease as part of the state's newborn screening system, which is a coordinated statewide program designed to identify hereditary and congenital disorders in infants that could lead to severe health or developmental problems, with the exception of cases where parents or guardians object. The Department's public health laboratory is generally the only authorized facility to perform these initial screening tests, and the system includes laboratory testing, reporting results, and follow-up activities to ensure rapid identification and treatment of affected children. The Department, in consultation with an advisory council, determines which screening tests are performed, establishes protocols for specimen collection, and maintains the overall screening system, which involves communicating results, locating infants with abnormal results, sharing information among healthcare providers and treatment centers, and providing necessary clinical and treatment information to families. This bill specifically adds Gaucher disease to the list of conditions the Department must screen for, and the new requirement will take effect on October 1, 2026.
