This bill requires the Maryland Medical Assistance Program, which is a state-funded health insurance program for low-income residents, to cover individual and group counseling aimed at helping people quit smoking, provided that state funding is available and federal law allows it. Additionally, the bill prohibits the Maryland Medical Assistance Program and managed care organizations, which are private companies that manage health services for the program, from requiring prior authorization, or pre-approval, for any product or service used to help individuals stop using tobacco.
